Capital Area Partnership Uplifting People, Inc. is a private non-profit community action agency that was established under the Economic Opportunity Act in 1965 to combat poverty in the Richmond Metropolitan area. CAPUP serves the communities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, Dinwiddie, and Prince George, and offers contract services through out the greater capital region. CAPUP is committed to providing the resources and services which allow individuals to help themselves and their communities
CAPUP serves two primary functions:
It acts as a bridge between poverty areas of surrounding cities, counties and social service agencies;
It develops and institutes new and innovative projects to meet the needs of the impoverished. Additionally, emphasis is placed on providing community residents with resources to help themselves.
CAPUP is governed by a board of directors; one-third of whom are public officials or their representatives; one-third elected representatives of the poverty areas served and one-third are representatives of business and industry and civic organizations.
CAPUP seeks and receives funding from local, state and federal government, foundations, churches, private industry and individuals.
